On Thursday my quiet little world was interrupted, and as of this posting it is just now returning to normal. The event in question was, of course, the Mitchell Report detailing alleged steroid use by Major League Baseball players. I'm sure everyone is aware of the content of this report because its release has dominated basically all news coverage for the last 24 hours. Everyone is up in arms about the "Steroid Era" of baseball, and performance enhancing drugs. Well... everyone but me. I'm unhappy for entirely different reasons. I'm pissed that my sports coverage has been completely hijacked by such bullshit.
My world revolves entirely around sports, watching sports, talking about sports, and watching people talk about sports. Nothing pisses me off more than when something like this interrupts that. There was a one hour period yesterday before my nap where I was forced to watch rodeo. Now don't get me wrong, I like rodeo, but it's definitely a second tier sport. I just couldn't take any more speculation about the tip of a needle intersecting with a ballplayer's sweaty ass.
They don't have any proof of anything. The most they can put on anyone is that they bought steroids over the internet. The only thing tying most of these guys together is some snitch dropping names to save his own ass. No positive drug tests, no reliable eyewitness accounts... now I'm not a lawyer but, that doesn't seem to add up to much.
Why are we even talking about this? As far as I'm concerned this is just a list of dudes with big foreheads, hairy backs, and anger management issues. I laughed out loud when Bud Selig threatened to punish the individuals named in the report. Punish how? Most of those guys don't even play anymore. And for those who do... the MLBPA would never allow you to suspend, fine, or otherwise penalize players without proof that they violated baseball's drug policy.
Everyone knows steroids are a problem in all sports, and not just professional baseball. If the owners really gave a shit about anything other than putting an exciting product on the field they would do something about it. Do the fans care? I think that's up to each individual. But what do they really care about? The integrity of the game or the players' health?
You have no idea how happy I was when I got home from work tonight and SportsCenter was covering actual baseball.
On a somewhat related note... If this many major leaguers are using steroids to just maintain performance, how bad is the steroid problem in the minor leagues? I would imagine those guys would inject just about anything to make it to the show. Just a thought.
