Red scare

I was reading the NY Times earlier and came across Paul Krugman's latest column. Good stuff. I laugh almost every time I hear people's arguments against the implementation of a national health care plan. My personal favorite is the use of the word "socialism." Oh no!

Maybe, just maybe, it would be a good thing for the federal government to provide health care for everyone. Business could save money on the benefits they provide to employees because health care would be out of the picture and we wouldn't hear countless stories of middle class individuals going bankrupt because of the extraordinary cost of medical care.

One thing I found interesting in Krugman's column was the fact that the U.S. spent six times as much on health care administration as other countries. Frankly, after seeing some of the salaries of executives at Altru Health System in Grand Forks, N.D. while working as a reporter, this doesn't surprise me at all. I'm not saying administrators' jobs are easy. The administration at Altru works hard in a demanding, complicated industry. However, $350K a year is a helluva lot of money to be making in Grand Forks.

It's time to cut some fat.
